More Brilliant Speech Details Revealed for CGDC 2010

The 3rd China Game Developers Conference (CGDC) is to be held from July 30 to August 1 at Shanghai International Convention Center. Game developers from both home and abroad will get together again right below the Oriental Pearl Tower to have discussions and decoding on hot topics as well as front-end technologies in the game developing process. CGDC 2010 uses the previous session as a good source of reference and tries its best, in terms of suggestions from the advisory board, to strike a balance among products, technologies and the localization of game developing while selecting topics for discussion as well as inviting speakers. All the above aims to provide a professional and effective platform for those game developers present. The interaction between elites from both home and abroad may spark off new ideas.

Since announcing the first three speakers in the last piece of news, the organizing committee of CGDC continues to make the second two speakers from the fields of music and on-line game design public as below:

Liu Hongyuan

Topic of speech:

The Power of Sound: Function and Usage

Abstract:

The importance of sound effect and music in games: the direct impression given by a game to its players is always a combination of game structure, picture and sound effect/music. Decisions made by players, you and me included, are driven by judgments of messages received continuously through the senses in a sensitive way. The practice guided by the idea of “audibility is enough” is sure to go downhill due to the rat race of the market and is doomed to disappoint the consumers who have a growing demand on games they play. To respect the players and to probe the creation of entertainment products should be the common procedure shared by all fun-oriented industries pursuing for natural development. Sound is a language with no lexicon: how to use time, space, frequency and timbre to get control over the information the players get from the sound. The combination of sounds and pictures: harmony creation and separate design. Effects of mutual support and contrast between picture and sound: “to demonstrate different effects of different sounds to the same picture by using game videos”.

Profile:

Mr. Liu Hongyuan is a well-known and creative producer of music and sound effect and has taken part in many extensively-sold games such as Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer, Marvel Ultimate Alliance?007:Quantum of Solace as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the AAA-level product that brings history-high income. At present, Mr. Liu Hongyuan is helping Microsoft with its Natal project by designing conceptive sound effect for it.

It has been five years since Mr. Liu started his own career. Mr. Liu has ten-year expertise of sound effect designing in the games industry and he also has an extensive educational background in sound engineering.

Jerry Mao

Topic of speech:

Comparison of Two Kinds of MMO Game Design: Process Experience Oriented and Numerical Result Oriented ---Take MKZ and Kingdom Tales for example

Abstract:

Mr. Mao’s speech mainly focuses on the following points concerning ideas of game design:

1. Look at on-line game in a new way---lay more stress on result than the experience itself, or vice versa?

2. The beginning 20 minutes vs. the later 20 month---contradiction between player-friendliness and duration of engagement of games

3. Generation mechanism of consumer motivation

4. Balance stricken among fairness, balance and ARPU

Profile:

Mr. Mao has 11-year of experience in the games industry. He joined Object Software in 1999 and has held positions such as chief programmer, director of R&D as well as game producer. Since 2005, Mr. Mao has been the deputy president of Object Software who is in charge of affairs of several fields including international business and the R&D system. He has also initiated and dominated many on-line games and console games such as MKZ, Kingdom Tales, The Millionaire’s Wonderland and Dragon Throne: Battle of Red Cliffs.

At present, Mr. Mao mainly holds the posts of producer and executive producer of MKZ, Kingdom Tales and The Millionaire’s Wonderland.

All in all, we are witnessing the enthusiasm of both the overseas Chinese and domestic game developers. Only through sharing, can the technical updating of the industry be realized. The organizing committee of CGDC is looking forward to absorbing more participants with lofty ideals to the conference.
