Faruk Yerli: Multi-Platform and International Development Will Help Chinese Games Succeed in Future

At the CGDC 2010 on August 1, Faruk Yerli, President and Managing Director of Crytek, citing the company’s growth story, offered two suggestions for the Chinese enterprise: 1. to mitigate risk, reduce cost and improve efficiency through multi-platform development; 2. to enter the international market and expand scope of sales with international games.

Faruk Yerli said, “Statistics have indicated a slowdown in the growth rate of Chinese online games. Multi-platform and international game development will be the key influential factor in the forthcoming years.”

Despite the slowdown, Crytek is still confident about the huge potential of China’s game department and the future performance of the Chinese enterprise. Faruk Yerli believed that the Chinese enterprises should combine the advanced technology of the European and American game companies with the oriental aesthetical and artistic talent to create unique works for worldwide distribution.

Faruk Yerli referred to movies including Kong Fu Panda and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which are regarded as typical examples of oriental topic and style combined with Western technology gaining huge success in the international market. In the game market, games featuring oriental aesthetics and those featuring Western technologies have achieved success respectively, and as the competition intensifies, a combination of the two advantages will give the games a striking feature and will be of great help for the Chinese enterprises in exploring the international market.

The latest statistics show that although the growth rate of China’s online game market is at a historical low in 2010, China’s online game products have entered the overseas market before. For example, Perfect World was the top Chinese exporter in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and its export revenue is expected to reach $100 million in 2010. Shanda and Giant Interactive have also taken steps to expand their overseas presence. The Chinese game Dragon was even released internationally prior to its domestic release, and has authorized agents in over 40 countries and regions.

As foreign experts concluded, Chinese enterprises have discovered a set of effective operation and management methods in the field of online game, while the Western game companies, except for companies including Blizzard Entertainment, have little experience in this regard. However, the Chinese companies are far behind in terms of game technologies, which is obviously indicated by the contrast of each side’s number of high-end games in the international market. In fact, in order to absorb the European and American companies’ advanced game development technologies, the Chinese game companies have been enhancing their capabilities through cooperation with foreign studios by means of acquisition and investment, of which The9’s acquisition of Red5 (a development studio set up by former Blizzard employees) was an example. However such capable Chinese development enterprises are quite small in number in the whole picture. Fortunately, CGDC is able to provide an opportunity for more Chinese enterprises to acquaint multiple premier overseas game technology companies, among which is Crytek with its advanced 3D game engine CryENGINE series.

At this year’s CGDC, Faruk Yerli exhibited the amazing features of CryENGINE 3 and attracted high attention for other game developers. Faruk Yerli aims to bring the top game technology to China and seek cooperation with local game enterprises this year. Global leading game companies including EA, PopCap, Sony Entertainment and CCP Games also had similar intentions.

CGDC served as a platform for overall cooperation between the foreign game technology elites and the domestic enterprises, while the latter also took this chance to learn the global leading technologies and seek talents and partners.
